His Excellency,
Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan
Governor of Delta State,
Government House,
Asaba.
Your Excellency,
RE: ACQUITTAL OF THE ALLEGED MURDERERS OF MR. S.A.K METSEAGHARUN
We, members of Ugborodo Patriots, have decided to resort to this open medium to communicate with you and express our deep but very sincere feelings about the subject.
We believe you will readily appreciate our reluctant but unavoidable resort to this medium as all our efforts to reach you otherwise than by this open medium have proved abortive.
You must by now be aware of the acquittal of those accuse of killing late Mr. Metseagharun some of whom are popularly reffered to as “Uduaghan Boys.” Now that the trial which resulted in the acquittal of those accused is over, we feel that it is time to say a word or two concerning the other aspects of the murder of this otherwise illustrious son of Ugborodo land.
We are deeply concerned that those accused of this heinous crime murder of an innocent soul as late S.A.K Metseaghanrun have enjoyed and continue to enjoy the patronage of the Delta State Government throughout the eight years of former Governor Ibori's regime and much more now under your regime, even while their trial for the capital offence of murder lasted.
We also have no doubt that you were instrumental to the patronages that they enjoyed under your cousin's government wherein you served as a top functionary.
Perhaps, it suffices to give example of such patronages here: one of the principal suspects, Mr. Thomas Ereyitomi, was recommended by you and appointed by Ibori's government as the Chairman of Ogidigben/Ugborodo Community Development Committee. In addition to that office, he was recently appointed by you as a member of the Delta Waterways Security Committee set up by your government.
Furthermore, Mr. Mofe Pirah, another principal accused in the murder trial was, pursuant to your recommendation appointed by the Ibori government as Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Affairs. With your active support, the said Mr. Mofe Pirah is the present Chairman of Itsekiri Regional Development Council (RDC).
Also through your backing, one Mr. Isaac Botosan, who was also an accused in the murder trial, is the present Chairman of the Management Committee of Ugborodo Community Trust. We can go on and on. Now, the moral question is; why should a government established under the law to promote peace, order and the well-being of the people openly identify with alleged criminals, select them for appointment into sensitive public offices and shower government patronages on them, particularly suspected criminals who are facing trial for the murder of a retired top government functionary?
We recall also that at a certain time in the past when both the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd. (SPDC) and Chevron Nigeria Limited were complaining bitterly about the activities of late Mr. Eric Igban, who was then the Youth Chairman of Ugborodo Community, you had him appointed as Special Assistant to Governor Ibori on Community Affairs. That was despite several letters written to the State government by the two oil companies complaining about the destructive activities of the said Eric Igban (now late) and calling on the government to bring him to book.
We are concerned that your support for the criminals in our midst has disrupted the peace of our community. Your action has not only encouraged criminality among our youths, but also elevated same to the level of a virtue and profitable venture in the minds of the youths of the community.
With your open support for those who stood trial for the murder of late S.A.K Metseagharun, it would have been foolhardy for anyone to have expected justice and fairness to prevail in the trial of your boys conducted by the judicial arm of the government presided over by you.
It was therefore not surprising that the trial judge after holding that the evidence showed that some of the accused persons had a case to answer in a murder trial, nevertheless allowed all the accused persons to remain on bail and enjoyed same until they were finally discharged and acquitted.
We are by this medium, therefore, appealing to you to leave our community alone and stop imposing criminals on us. We like you to remember that the criminals you promote today may turn out to be your Achilles hill tomorrow. We also use this medium to appeal to the National Judicial Council to investigate the conduct of the trial judge.
You might have succeeded in using your executive powers to shield your boys from accounting for their crimes against the Metseagharun family and Ugborodo Community, according to the law of the land; but surely, you cannot protect or shield them from accounting to God for their deeds.
We remain,
Yours faithfully,
For: Ugborodo Patriots
